Bundled with an SB-800 Speedlights is the Nikon’s Creative Lighting System (CLS) wherein a flash can be controlled off-camera. This is one of the considerations that I had before buying one, I’ve read a lot of discussion about this & the strobist technique & I was very impressed of it’s capability. After spending a huge amount of money for my upgrade, I want to make sure that this thing is working, I did an experiment on Nikon D80 & SB800 CLS, here are the results.

On these experiments, I held on the SB800 flash, it was set on “Remote” mode, I then placed the camera on a tripod, the built-in flash was set on “Commander” mode. Of course, I need a model & I volunteered since no one is with me during the experiment. The camera was set on self-timer which means I have 10 seconds to position myself & make sure that I will be included in the photo.
What interest me on the subject was (or still is) the fact that I can build an economical, mobile & lightweight studio system. If & when this experiment will succeed, all I need to buy is another flash (probably an SB600) & a bounce umbrella, this can mimic (well almost) the huge studion lighting capabiliy.

The results were not that impressive (I know that for a fact), there are a lot of things that needed to be learned & implemented, but this is my first step in doing it the right way.
