bored & not knowing what to do, sumama ako sa tropa na mangisda.
i don’t have a rod & reel, wala na rin akong interes na mangisda, for me i used to do it to earn a living (and hated it!) that’s why i can’t comprehend how people enjoy it as a hobby. when i was young, my father used to bring me in the middle of manila bay, malinis at maraming isda pa ang manila bay dati. we will leave before dawn to check the nets for some catch, we used to have a 30 foot motor-driven/wooden boad christened after my mother’s name, lady corazon. on a normal day, nakakahuli kami ng mahigit 20 kilos ng alimasag.
when tatay decided to test the waters of saudi arabia (or should i say sand), we have to sell the bangka, 2 na yung bangka namin during that time, the other one is a hand-paddled 10 foot boad christened after my sister’s name, baby rosalie.
water is our life, we didn’t escape the curse of the sea, through our teenage years (with my two brothers) we virtually rely on manila bay for our allowances & food on our table. tatay’s earnings were reserved for our education & other household expenses.
at 14 i learned to dive & fish in the middle of bacoor bay with neither rod nor reel available, just fishing line, hooks, sinkers & sea water worms as bait. at 16 i joined as an “apprentice” for a fishing technique called “zafra” where we leave the dry land at 4pm & return with our catch at 8 the next morning.
looking at the sea last night brings back memories, memories that i spent battling the waves. memories of danger & success, i wish i never had experience those, siguro kung hindi ko naranasan ko, i would have enjoyed fishing.
niko brought his new baby, it was a nice site to shoot, we were standing on a wrecked wooden boat, for me the composition is perfect. niko started shooting with flash on, matt & i joined him & took our own pix also.
in the middle of the photo-op, i saw the coast guard (on wheels) approaching & is shouted “and’yan na ang pulis, itago n’yo na yan!” good thing they heard it at itinago na nila ang camera. as expected, tinanong ng pulis kung nasaan ang camera & they denied having one, delikado, baka kumpiskahin, sayang naman ang 3 buwang allowance!
not having a rod & reel at bawal ding kumuha ng larawan, sinundan na lang namin ang itik1 na may dalang lambat (na kung tawagin sa amin ay dala), aba saglit lang na naghahagis ng lambat ang itik ay nakahuli na ng mahigit 10 kilo (rough estimate ko) & he’s kind enough to share some of his catch to us.
i did enjoy that “fishing expedition” may thrill! Hehehe!

@tats, sobrang hirap ang mangisda to earn & i never had fun doing it.
